Ishida multihead weighing technology is ensuring speed and accuracy for two packaging formats for a famous coffee brand. The company recognized that product quality also depends on the quality of the packaging and invested in Ishida multihead weighing technology to fill cans which are supplied to restaurants and cafes around the world.
An entry-level Ishida CCW-SE-210 with 2 liters hoppers is counting by weight to pack 18 coffee capsules into a quadro bag for the retail market, while two mid-range CCW-RS-210 weighers with 5-liter hoppers are dedicated to packing 6.6 lbs. (3kg) tins of coffee beans for the foodservice sector.
The Ishida weighers can achieve the high target weight in a single product dump thanks to the 5-liter hoppers and an increase in weighing speed has improved packing speed from 10 to 25 cans/min.
The CCW-SE-210 is counting 18 coffee capsules into flat-bottomed quadro bags at around 50 packs per minute.
As well as delivering accuracy to within 3-4g of target weight, a key benefit of the weighers has been their speed. This has enabled an increase in packing operation from 10 to 25 cans per minute. As a result, the company is now investing in additional end of line equipment in order to be able to maximize the benefits of this speed increase.
Both weighers are discharging the coffee into a customized filling system, which incorporates a series of rotating chutes that direct the coffee beans into the moving cans. With the increases in speed from the weighers, the line is now handling around 50 tons of coffee beans every day.
Thanks to its 5-liter hoppers the Ishida weighers can achieve the high target weight in a single product dump. Because after the roasting process, some coffee beans can occasionally stick together, the pool hoppers incorporate a grid design that prevents clumps of beans falling into the weigh hopper.
The two weighers for coffee beans are in operation 24 hours a day, five days a week. Feedback from the Technical Department is that they are easy to operate, and their reliability is one of their most important benefits.

Currently the line handles four different coffees for its 6.6 lbs. (3kg) cans (standard, decaffeinated, dark and extra dark) on the Ishida RS weighers but their flexibility and versatility mean that new varieties, which the company is continually working on, can easily be introduced at any time. The weighers are cleaned after each shift, and between changeovers, with a major clean at the end of every week. It is a simple process, thanks to the hygienic design of the weighers, with smooth lines and surfaces that avoid dust traps, and the simple dismantling and re-hanging of the hoppers without the need for tools.
The 10 head Ishida CCW-SE offers speed, accuracy and efficiency at an entry-level price and is ideal for all types of dry applications. The weigher is being used for the company’s capsule system. With the capsules all identical in weight, the CCW-SE-210 can count 18 coffee capsules into flat-bottomed quadro bags at around 50 packs per minute. Again, the weigher discharges the pods into a custom-designed handling system that transfers them to the bags.
