"The equipment is working exactly as promised, the conveying systems have reduced finished product waste by 50%, and the bagmaking equipment has reduced our film scrap by nearly 75%. The entire installation and start-up experience was outstanding. Despite the tight deadlines, the project was executed on time and allowed us to meet some very substantial fourth quarter business objectives."

Fresh Salad Weigher Feed Conveyors

Recently Heat and Control was selected by one of Europe’s largest bagged salad processors to provide several FastBack 260E weigher feeders for fresh salad product to one of its factories in Spain. Before making the switch to Heat and Control’s patented FastBack conveyors, the customer was using a combination of vibratory and belt conveyors.

Compared to a vibratory conveyor, the customer says the horizontal motion FastBack 260E’s provide an even feed to the dispersion cone on the Ishida multihead weigher eliminating the need to employ operators to manually push the product around the scale. In areas where belt conveyors were feeding the weigher the start stop effect meant “clumps” of salad fell on to the scale. Since installing FastBacks, the customer has confirmed they have observed a noticeable improvement in scale efficiency.

Compared to the very high travel rate of the Fastback, the vibratory conveyors used a lot more energy but appeared to be inefficient in moving leafy salad product over a given distance. Excessive noise was also an issue with the vibratory conveyors which has now been solved with the quiet operating FastBack.

Prior to making the switch to FastBacks the customer was experiencing periodic cracking in their vibratory conveyor pans, as well as tears in their belt conveyors due to the weight of the wet salad product. The customer understood making the switch to the horizontal motion conveyors would mean a dramatic reduction in maintenance downtime and spare parts costs thanks to the proven reliability of the FastBack 260E’s modular drive unit.

The plant still has vibratory and belt conveyors in use however due to the improved performance and reliability of the FastBack conveyors, the customer is planning on replacing them where ever possible. A future intricate project is in the works for upgrading a major transport channel of belt conveyors in the factory for a FastBack inline distribution system.
