"Our Ishida combination weigher has been in production for over seven years, operating five days a week for at least two shifts per day. During this time, we've spent only $216 in spare parts and never required a single service visit!"

The Pretzel Company Pty Ltd

David Mostert, entrepreneurial mastermind, put Baker Street Snacks on the South African map during the 1990’s and sold it to National Brands in 2000. When David decided in 2003 that he wants to venture back into the snack market he did so with The Pretzel Company. David set himself a goal to design the 2500m2 plant with maximum flexibility for producing a diverse range of products. The challenge was to find equipment that could deliver high quality finished product with fast changeover times and maximum efficiency.

Calling on previous experience with Reading Bakery Systems, David looked to leading equipment suppliers to not only install the RBS equipment but also supply all the ancillaries. Heat and Control was afforded the opportunity to assist with the plant processing layout, turnkey design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the plant. Heat and Control’s equipment and controls supply included components from the oven discharge through slurry seasoning, cooling to a packaging line consisting of FastBack® horizontal motion conveying and Varilift™ bucket conveying onto a multihead weigher.

The Pretzel Company can take full advantage of the versatility of Heat and Control equipment by dumping rejected product before it reaches the multiheads. The Heat and Control line also offers accumulation capability. “Not only is it easy to set the control configuration to ensure maximum efficiency of our multihead weighers” reports David Mostert, The Pretzel Company Managing Director, “but the Heat and Control line is extremely versatile and easy to clean. We pioneered slurry coating of pretzels in the 1990’s and I place a high premium on cleanliness and hygiene. The CIP system integrated in the Varilft has been one of my best investments!!”

“The FastBack and Varilift designs are simple and reliable,” says Mostert, “and based on our past experience with electro-magnetic vibratory conveyors and traditional bucket elevators, it is not only a vast improvement in terms of technology, but also an improvement in product quality delivery to the weighers. The design allows for the maintenance of product integrity, eliminates breakage and by delivering them more gently, ensures a quality product goes into each package.”

“The Heat and Control engineering team has done an outstanding job in providing quick and accurate answers to any questions we’ve had about the installation,” he continues, “and they have solved design problems that other vendors have been unable to provide. They have proved a critical link in meeting an extremely tight deadline in plant start-up."

“The plant layout and controls are the result of a strong team effort,” says Mostert. “We have not always had a strong relationship with Heat and Control, but they managed to dispel my reservations by proving themselves more than an equipment supplier. They distinguish themselves from other vendors through their service, technical support and commitment to problem solving and decision-making. They maintained good dialogue throughout the project, resulting in a trouble free start-up. With a partner like Heat and Control, we can focus on our customers."
